More replies to the Meerkats’ palm oil letters

The Meerkats received a flurry of replies to their palm oil letters in the last week or so of term.  So far, we’ve had three letters from different branches of Premier Foods as well as replies from Warburtons, Unilever, Nestle, Mars, Wrigleys, Kingsmill and Heinz.  Almost all of the replies avoid the thorny issue of product labelling.  Click through to read the replies and comments from some of the Year 4 Meerkats…

  1. Emily S says:

It is quite a short letter so we could tell from it that not all our questions were answered. Kingsmill have not answered our labelling question and it is not very clear. They say that their ‘suppliers play an active part in RSPO and/or the ‘Green Palm’ trading initiatve but we cannot really tell if this means that all their palm oil is sustainable. – Emily S & Will

  2. Harish & Mia says:

They are not saying if they use sustainable or RSPO approved palm oil in their products and they also doin’t tell us if they’re GOING to use RSPO approved palm oil. ~ Harish

They don’t make it very clear if they use sustainable palm oil and I don’t really know what they mean. I think the rest of the letter is quite clear on what they are saying, I just think the bit about the palm oil isn’t very clear as to whether they use sustainable palm oil or not. ~ Mia
